McKenna was the Houston Astros’ 4th round pick out of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2018. Pre-Draft, he was ranked at #97 as a speedy outfielder with limited power potential.

After signing, McKenna raked. After 32 games with the Tri-City Valley Cats of the New York-Penn League, he was moved up to the Midwest League and the Quad Cities River Bandits. Combined, he slashed .311/.394/.512 with seven homers. Repeating Class A in 2019, however, McKenna took a step backward (.252/.327/303 and one homer over 238 at bats).
